Dogs In Paradise: Play With Puppies on One of The World’s Best Beaches

By Monty C. Charne
July 19, 2018

Whether you’re looking to adopt or just want a chance to play with some dogs in the surf and sand, make Potcake Place your next vacation destination. This rescue organization is based on Providenciales in Turks and Caicos, one of the most beautiful islands in the entire Caribbean. This organization, run entirely by volunteers, works to save, shelter, socialize, and home stray dogs from across the Turks and Caicos. Not only do they do this great work, but they let their dogs frolic on sandy beaches and let tourists take them on walks in the waves. If you’re a dog lover, what better place to spend your next vacation?

What is a Potcake?

As the name suggests, this rescue organization is dedicated to the rescue of Potcake dogs. Potcakes are a mixed-breed dog found on Caribbean islands that grow to between 35 and 75 pounds. They often have the look of a shepherd-mix, with smooth coats, cocked ears, and long faces. These dogs are intelligent, loyal, and calm, making them a great first pup. They are also incredibly resilient, with many living as strays across the Caribbean. These dogs gained their name from the rice and pea cake that local residents often feed these strays.

What is Potcake Place?

Potcake Place is dedicated to finding homes for the hundreds of homeless Potcake dogs that reside in Turks and Caicos. Staffed entirely by volunteers, this organization is the island’s only dog shelter and cares for between 50 and 75 dogs at one time. Potcake Place not only finds and rescues the dogs, but works with local vets to give them dewormers, vaccinations, and any other treatment they may need. They then foster and socializes their dogs before adoption, and screen every adoption applicant carefully to ensure these dogs go to a good home.

Where do you come in?

Socializing puppies takes a lot of help! If you want to come to play with their crew, they are always looking for day volunteers to take the pups on walks in the sand and give them lots of love and attention. When you visit this charity, volunteers find the right dog for you based on your personality and experience. They then give you a bag of doggy essentials, including water, treats, toys, and pick-up bags, and send you out to the beach with your new doggy pal. And if you fall in love with a dog while you’re there, the organization will help you get all the paperwork you need to take him back with you to your forever home.
